Steps to Do It Yourself Bathtub Refinishing

What you need to know in order to refinish your bath tub yourself, including material and the steps to get the job done.

Do it yourself bathtub refinishing can take a lot of time as well as a lot of effort. It is no easy task, but it can be accomplished. This is a project that requires chemicals as well as safety equipment and ventilation. The precision of this task supersedes that of many other DIY projects. But, with the proper dedication, you can end up with a beautifully redone bathtub.

Having someone else refinish your tub can cost a large chunk of change. Bathtub refinishing can save you hundreds of dollars, while also allowing you to maintain certain skills along the way.

1. Removal – First, start by removing the lever plate that covers the lever that controls the opening and closing of the drain. Also, remove the drain cover. Continue by removing any older caulk and or silicone. This is generally around the edges of tubs.
2. Scour – Scouring the tub so it is free of scum and dirt is important. You should use a non abrasive cleaner (if your kit did not include this, you’ll need to purchase some).
3. Rinse your tub – Do a thorough job.
4. Sand – If your kit instructs you to sand your tub, do so now. Then, rinse when completed.
5. Solvent – If your kit instructs you to use a solvent, do so now. This is a primer reducer- any soap or left over cleaner residue that is on your tub will be removed by the solvent.
6. Taping – When dry, begin taping off your tub. Any areas that will not be painted need to be taped off to protect them. Any fixtures (such as faucets, etc) should be covered with a bag of some sort if you do not wish to paint them.
7. Safety – Before beginning to prime, which is the next step, equip yourself with your safety gear. Prepare your primer. Use your paint sprayer (or a brush) to apply the primer. If it is possible, open windows to ventilate the area.
8. Time – Allow primer to dry.
9. Topcoat – When dry, add the topcoat with either a paint sprayer or a brush.
10. Drying – Remove tape, but leave the bags. Wait until all coats are dry before removing them. The average drying time is roughly 48 hours.

Bathtub refinishing DIY projects can be a very rewarding task that can also help to teach you some DIY skills. There are some instances, however, that individuals are not physically capable of performing do it yourself bathroom refinishing tasks. In these instances, it is best to hire a professional. If you feel you are unsure of whether or not you are capable, it is not recommended you do so.
